Level 2 EV Charger Installation

Any brand, hardwired or plug-in, sized to your car and your panel, from a licensed, insured local electrician.

Level 2 basics

Level 2 is 240-volt charging, the same voltage as a dryer or range. Depending on the charger setting and the car, it typically adds roughly 15 to 45 miles of range per hour, enough to refill a normal day of driving overnight. A standard 120-volt outlet (Level 1) adds only a few miles per hour.

Chargers are sold in common sizes: 32, 40 and 48 amps (on 40-, 50- and 60-amp circuits). Your car's onboard charger caps how fast it can actually charge, so there's no benefit to buying more amperage than your car or your panel can use.

Hardwired or plug-in?

Many Level 2 chargers come in either a hardwired or a plug-in (NEMA 14-50 or 6-50) version. Hardwired units can run at 48 amps, and there is no receptacle to wear out. Plug-in units are easier to take with you when you move. Either way, the circuit has to be sized for continuous load and protected the way current code requires.

Typical cost

Published Utah ranges for a straightforward Level 2 install run from $500 to $1,200 (labor, permit and inspection, per a Weber/Davis electrician)[1] up to $800 to $2,500, with about $1,400 typical, per another Utah electrician.[2] The charger itself is usually a separate purchase. Full cost guide.

Smart features worth paying for (and not)

Most EVs can schedule charging from their own app, so a basic charger works fine on a time-of-use rate. Smart chargers are worth it for power sharing between two chargers, load management on a tight panel, or detailed energy tracking.

FAQ

What size Level 2 charger should I get?

Match it to your car's onboard charger and to the circuit your panel can support. For many drivers, 32 to 40 amps is plenty to refill overnight.

Can you install a charger I bought online?

Generally yes, if it's a safety-listed (for example UL-listed) product. The electrician will confirm it's suitable before installing.

How long does a Level 2 install take?

A simple garage install is often a few hours on site. The permit and any utility coordination set the calendar time.
