Tesla Wall Connector Installation
Hardwired 48-amp home charging for Teslas and, with the Universal Wall Connector, nearly any EV, installed by a licensed, insured local electrician.
What a Tesla Wall Connector install involves
A Wall Connector is hardwired to its own 240-volt circuit. At full power it delivers 48 amps, which requires a 60-amp circuit, but it can be set lower during installation to match what your panel can spare. A typical install includes the breaker, wire or cable sized for the run, conduit where it's exposed, mounting, configuration in the Tesla app, the permit, and inspection.
Tesla sells two home units. The Wall Connector has a NACS plug. The Universal Wall Connector has a NACS plug with a built-in J1772 adapter, so it can also charge most non-Tesla EVs. Tesla lists it at $660, though it isn't always in stock.[1][2] Because many 2025 and 2026 EVs from other brands now come with the same NACS (SAE J3400) port, a "Tesla charger" is increasingly just a home charger.
What it typically costs
One Utah electrician publishes $800 to $1,200 for a hardwired Tesla charger when the panel is next to the garage, and $1,100 to $1,600 when the panel is in the basement 20 to 30 feet away, not counting the charger itself.[3] A Salt Lake City electrician lists $1,600 to $2,400 for a hardwired Wall Connector install.[4] Detached garages, trenching and panel upgrades are priced separately. See the cost guide.
Power sharing for two Teslas
Wall Connectors can share one circuit and split the power between two cars. That’s often cheaper than running two full-size circuits, and kinder to a busy panel. Ask the electrician to set it up if a second EV is likely in the next few years.
Before the electrician arrives
- Decide which side of the garage the car's charge port will face.
- Take a photo of your panel with the door open and the main breaker visible.
- Know whether the Wall Connector will be on Wi-Fi. It needs it for firmware updates and some features.
FAQ
Do I need a Tesla-certified installer?
Any licensed electrician can install a Wall Connector to code, with a permit. Tesla also lists certified installers. Either way, the installation must follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Is a Wall Connector better than a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
Hardwired allows up to 48 amps and avoids wear on a receptacle. A 14-50 outlet is more flexible if you might take the charger with you. See our NEMA 14-50 page.
Can a Universal Wall Connector charge my non-Tesla EV?
Yes. It has a NACS connector with a built-in J1772 adapter, so it works with most EVs sold in the U.S.
Is there a rebate for a Tesla Wall Connector in Utah?
Not from Rocky Mountain Power in 2026, and the federal 30C credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026. See the rebate guide.
